Supporting Your Body When You Sit for a Living

GLPGJuly 2, 20252 min read

It’s not unusual to end the day feeling stiff, drained, or sore. Sitting for hours at a time, session after session, can take a toll on your body in ways you might not notice right away. Even if you’re used to the rhythm of back-to-back appointments, your body isn’t meant to be still for that long.

Over time, the impact can add up. Tight shoulders, a sore lower back, headaches, or general fatigue may all be signs that your current routine could use a few adjustments.

Small Shifts That Can Make a Big Difference

Take small movement breaks
Even 30 seconds between sessions can help. Stand up, stretch your arms overhead, roll your shoulders, or walk to another room. The goal isn’t a full workout, just enough to reset your body.

Support your back
Adding a pillow or cushion behind your lower back can reduce tension and improve posture. A small change in your chair setup can make a long day feel more manageable.

Try standing occasionally
If you have a way to stand during sessions, even part of the time, it may help reduce strain. Some clinicians keep a laptop stand or small riser nearby so they can shift positions between clients.

Pay attention to your feet
Keeping your feet flat on the floor or supported by a footrest can help with alignment. If your legs are dangling or crossed all day, it can affect your back and hips. If you tend to feel restless or have a hard time sitting still, consider using an under-the-desk foot stepper. It can offer subtle movement throughout the day and help reduce stiffness without disrupting your workflow.

Stretch at the end of the day
A few minutes of stretching before you head home or transition to your evening can help release the tension you’ve built up. It doesn’t have to be a full routine, just a few intentional movements that feel good.

Tips for sitting all day as a therapist

How It Helps You Do Your Best Work

Taking care of your physical comfort isn’t just about feeling better in your body. It can directly support how you show up for your clients. Small adjustments throughout the day can improve focus, reduce fatigue, and make sessions feel more manageable.

When your body is more supported, you’re likely to experience:

  • Greater mental clarity
  • More consistent energy
  • Less distraction from aches or discomfort
  • A stronger ability to stay present and attuned

You’re doing important work and you deserve to feel good doing it! Taking a few moments to care for your body is one way to make that possible.

A Network That Has Your Back

At Great Lakes Psychology Group, we’re committed to helping clinicians feel supported in every aspect of their work. In addition to tools that simplify your day-to-day, we offer opportunities to connect with other providers through peer consultation and professional networking. These channels not only foster connection but also open doors to local events, shared resources, and ongoing learning, so you’re never navigating the work alone.
